- Social and Environmental Vulnerability
Social, political, economic and environmental events pose both immediate and ongoing challenges for the port’s fisheries and the impacts reverberate throughout the community.
Dredging
The harbor entrance channel and other critical areas require annual maintenance dredging to ensure that vessels can safely access the harbor and its facilities. Dredging is done by the US Army Corps of Engineers and requires federal funding support (via Congressional allocation).

Squid Fishery
High dependence on the squid fishery for revenue, which in turn (also) helps the port qualify for federal dredging support.

Changes in Ocean Uses
Decommissioning of offshore oil and gas platforms and potential expansion of ocean aquaculture in the region have mixed implications for fisheries and other ocean uses and the port.

COVID-19 Pandemic
Disruption due to COVID-19 pandemic, including markets and supply chains for many types of seafood-producing businesses closure/limited operation of tourist-serving businesses and restaurants. CPFVs likewise operated on a more limited basis than usual.
